Ombré Heart-Shaped Cookies

How is that it’s been a year since I’ve made these ombré Valentine’s cookies here?! They were one of my most visited blog posts and I really wanted to share something similar for this Valentine’s Day…that’s when I discovered Felicia from The Starving Chef’s Blog. Her Pink Ombré sugar cookies are absolutely adorable and easy to make with the whole family (including Miles)!

Below is The Starving Chef’s Blog‘s recipe with some adaptation.

Ingredients
Cookies:
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 2 sticks butter at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup Crisco shortening
  • 4 egg whites + 1 yolk
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 package white chocolate chips (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla (optional)

For the Shape/Colouring:

  • Pink gel colouring (I used this one here)
  • Red gel colouring (same as above)
  • Heart shaped cookie cutters (I used these here for both recipes)

Instructions
For the Cookies:
1. Preheat oven to 375F
2. In a stand mixer, beat butter and sugar together until light in colour and fluffy. Then, add in egg whites and yolk one at a time and mix until incorporated between each egg white. (If using, add the vanilla now).
3. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking soda. Slowly add the flour mix, a quarter cup at a time, to the bowl while the mixer stirs at a low speed. Right before adding the last bit of flour, add the chocolate chips. *The dough should be thick and not stick readily to the sides of the bowl.
4. Separate dough into separate, smaller bowls. (I divided my batch into 3 different bowls).
5. For the ombre colour effect, add a few drops of food colouring to each ball of dough until the desired colours are achieved. I used a combination of pink, and red gel colours -1 drop in the first for light pink; 2 drops pink for second; and 2 drops pink plus 1 drops red for third.
6. Roll out dough and cut out cookies with heart shaped cookie cutters.
7. Place cut out cookies on parchment paper about 1 inch apart.
8. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges turn light brown.
9. Allow to cool on cooling rack and enjoy!
