Weekend Getaway to Wine Country

Go ahead and ask any parent if they desire to sleep in or have some childless days. When Wine Country Ontario reached out to help celebrate the launch of this year’s guide and to showcase the amazing appellations that make up wine country, we obviously jumped up and packed the car! Well, I might be exaggerating about packing the car because that’s another job in itself, but we were excited for a weekend getaway to Wine Country!

You guys know I love my wines and have been to a few places over the years in Ontario for it, like Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Prince Edward County, but this time around we headed over to the Georgian Bay area. Personally, I’ve only been to the area for skiing and snowboarding in Collingwood but never for WINE! Needless to say, this mini trip changed my whole perspective on the area and what it has to offer. Besides, what better way is there to spend winters with winter sports as well as being able to indulge in local VQA wines! Today, I’ll be sharing the wineries we visited and activities we enjoyed on our weekend getaway. Keep in mind we only went for 2 days and 1 night but it was just enough time for some tired parents for some time alone.

About a 2 hour drive from the city, Coffin Ridges Boutique Winery was our first stop. When you first arrive, you can see the beautiful vineyard that seems like it goes on forever, and walking through the winery itself, you’re welcomed with a breathtaking view of the Bay. We headed inside and had a tasting of different whites, reds, and ciders before committing to a glass of cider and a glass of Riesling on their elevated deck overlooking Georgian Bay. I was a little sad we had made this our first stop because it was such a gem, but we knew more wine was waiting for us.

Next on our list was The Roost Wine Company which was definitely worth ordering a Roost Plate filled with delicious cheeses, meats and nuts after our wine tasting. The view from the hilltop and the 19th century barn is gorgeous especially on a sunny summer afternoon. It was by far our favourite spot and we decided to spend the rest of the evening here enjoying more wine of course.

Before heading back to the city the next day, we enjoyed brunch at the Tremont Cafe, just the two of us. I sometimes forget what its like to eat on our own, and actually get to chew our food and talk like normal people! After brunch, we headed over to Georgian Hills Vineyard for our last winery stop of the weekend. Considering that it was a Monday, we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. We enjoyed a small flight and the view of the vineyard in the quietness of the bay. The weather held up just long enough that we were able to enjoy the patio area.

We ended our wine weekend getaway with a visit to Scandinave Spa in Collingwood before heading home. If you’ve never been, you MUST go! This is our second time here and it’s a great way to spend a day at the spa.

We were wined out by the time we got home but had such an amazing time exploring this emerging region in Ontario of VQA wineries. Honestly, the weekend was exactly what we needed, and I can’t wait to explore more of what Ontario wineries are doing.
